This book is my obsession

The woman who had two navels is a masterpiece... it is so intricately true, yet, surreal... it's not easy to understand, and one has to really dig in the contents of the book to realize its meaning...The book is hauntingly beautiful. It creates a classic atmosphere through eerie, seemingly sepia-colored flashbacks, entwined in the present setting of the novel... The impression of entering a vivid dream is felt, as one finds himself embraced by a novel of this brillance and intensity. This is a contemporary novel with a very ingenious, chaotic plot... It is a very challenging book to read and understand. However, once you do, the reward is so great, it is simply overwhelming. This novel is meant to be read only once, for the next time one reads it, that the important element of surprise would obviously be gone. The story is like the unraveling of a jewel, slowly and skillfully. The difficult plot is very confusing at times, however, if one would read carelfully and with depth, he will find that all his questions will be satisfied in the end. This is a book recommemnded only for advanced readers who are capable of understanding writing in streams of consciousness. Those who are inferior readers will fail to see the beauty and magnificence of such an important book.

All Because of My Professor II

I have finished reading the book and it was superb! I knew it...from the moment I read the first chapter that I was going to like it. The author employed a style that is very rare among other writers. He does not morally preach but the book makes you think if he intentionally did that or not. Hay! I admire Connie's courage to change. At least even at the last minute she was able to take into what the Monsons were trying to persuade her into. Same thing goes with the other characters, and especially Dr. Monson, too. I felt his grave disappointment, finding that there was no longer "HOME" in the Philippines. Now, I must begin to write my critical analysis to this book. Am I going to give it an A plus, plus, plus rating or what! You bet!

All Because of my Professor!

HI! I am reading the last two chapters of this novel. At first, my mind was drifting somewhere which is the reason why I find it difficult to understand the sequence of the story. But then, I realized that the style was mainly of flashbacks--->which I come to like best in short stories and novels. I really recommend this book even if I haven't finished it yet. You know, I can't stop reading since I've begun. The feeling of suspense and excitement makes you want to turn to the next page...!Well, if there's one novel I would say that truly touched my "insides" it would be this. I do not blame my professor now for giving me this as a project. He is truly one for the books!

The book I'll never forget

It's my first time to read a novel by Nick Joaquin. I was fascinated with the way he presented the plot and the flashbacking of events. Although at first, I only read it for my course's requirement, yet I found it so amusing especially with Connie and her mother as I moved along the pages of the novel. Something that I did not expect to finish reading until the last pages of the book. My journey with Nick Joaquin was unforgettable. Now I know why Filipinos have the power to write great masterpieces, like this.

A Piece to Return to

I first read this book when I was in the seventh grade. Quite frankly, I was uncertain of its impact on me then. But ever since, I've found myself rereading this book often. The reason I return to "The Woman Who Had Two Navels" is because of a beautiful and poignant story and a set of characters, all of whom, seem to transcend time. This book reminds me of the sorrow and the loneliness and the occasional glimmer of hope found within works by the more popular writers, Carson McCullers and Tennessee Williams.
