Yes, it was too helpful!!

I'm sorry so many others here had little use for this book--I love it! We used it to paint our living room and dining room and I lent it to my brother who used it as well. It's the variety of combinations that is thrilling to see. It's hard for me to go to a paint store, look at a huge array of color cards and envision my rooms. The blue with the yellow tinge, red tinge? Dark or lighter? Will this look good with my woodwork and furniture? This book helps a lot with being able to visualize your own home with a variety of combinations. The best thing about this book is that it shakes up your narrow views--at least mine were narrow--about color, tone and hue combinations. Someone here said who would paint a ceiling anything other than white? We did!! A pleasant light rose. Along with the soft blue of the LR and equal tone of fern green in the DR, somehow the non-white ceiling complements the natural and artificial lighting and general "feel" of the 2 rooms. We moved into a home where the owners had just installed blood red wall-to-wall carpeting. Really hard to determine what would go with that. By playing around with the flooring colors, we could light on one of many good combinations. Of course the furniture featured in the book is neutral and probably won't be like yours. So one of the LR combinations might not inspire. But look at some of the mixes for the kitchen and bath. It's looking back and forth to see how the colors themselves blend. Who knew that you could paint the ceiling a pale green and have light grayish floor with rich maroon walls...and it works? You can't look at paint chips and picture how they'll look in your home. Each room has many pages of suggested complementary colors. If you don't want to change the color of your floor, find the page that matches it. There will be a suggested wall and ceiling scheme for that floor. But play with the many different wall pages to get a sense of the effect many different colors will have on the floor and vice versa. Maybe you'll be attracted to contrasting colors instead of complementary ones. If you want decorating books with more conventional color combos, there is a huge variety. But this book lets you tailor colors for your own home and encourages your creativity. Be unique!! Step outside the box!! My mother is one whose biggest decisions are whether to go with the eggshell white or the winter white because white makes the room look bigger. Wrong!! White often makes a room look colder and is jarring to the eyes, making it less comfortable. Go for cozy. Go for bold. Go for highlights. My favorite decorating book--paint rocks!

How color affects space and existing conditions!

I love how this book shows how different colors can change a layout without having to change major items (i.e. your furniture). They say paint is the cheapest way to change a room and this book shows how. It definantely pays for itself, trust me. I had a darker colored room and flipped through this book and saw all the possibilities for making it a warmer more spacious place. I chose an orange-peach color (close to one of the colors I saw in the book) and I got a whole new room! It feels much more like home. I'm so glad I found this book, otherwise I may have never been bold enough to paint it that color. Excellent buy, well worth the price, it's a steal!!!
