Book Overview

Anyone who has ever seen a two-year-old start bouncing to a beat knows that music speaks to us on a very deep level. But it took celebrated teacher and music visionary Don Campbell to show us just how deep, with his landmark book The Mozart Effect.Stimulating, authoritative, and often lyrical, The Mozart Effect has a simple but life-changing message: music is medicine for the body, the mind, and the soul. Campbell shows how modern science has begun...

Life Changing

This book has been life changing in healing my Mother's brain injuries after a trauma in an accident with a tractor trailer. Having read the book, I took his music for healing to her hospital ICU and instructed the nurses to keep the music on at all times. I literally watched her come out of a coma, first tapping her toes to the music, then her fingers, then humming. In the unsettling sounds of a hospital, this gave her calm and focused on the area of healing where she needed it most. Personally, anytime I want to be focused, I also use Don Campbell's music. It works!

Well documented

I absolutely disagree with any reviewer who states that this booklacks substantiation. The "recommended reading" section is seven pages long and lists several dozen books written by academics, scientists, medical doctors and therapists. The "resources" section is eleven pages long and lists active training and music therapy centers in Europe, Asia and North and South America. The "footnotes" section is twenty-two pages long. This is an entertaining and well written overview of the field of music therapy and would benefit any person interested in expanding human potential. I've been involved in music for twenty-four years including record and concert production and hosting a daily radio program. I've had the opportunity to come in direct contact with some of the world's greatest musicians and I feel certain most of them would find this book fascinating. I certainly did. I also received scientific training as an undergraduate at an Ivy League university (neuroscience at Princeton) and did not find this book deficient in any way.

Music Therapist supports the big picture

Don Campbell had the courage to show the big picture of how music has helped many people. He writes beautifully on how to inspire , focus and empower our lives through the inspired art. As a music therapist for many years, I help patients regain their hope and power with music. Science will never be able to measure the power of music. I hope science will begin to appreciate that no one piece of music will make us smart, make us well or creative. Good research comes from the antedotal observatrions. Pay attention to this book, it may open many new possibilities for music in hospitals and schools.

A powerful contribution explaining the power of music !

Don has truly been a pioneer in the effects of music on mind, body, and spirit. His life has been focused on music, no doubt since his womb experiences! Don has been a personal friend and cohort in music with me for 15 years. Together we wrote "Rhythms of Learning", an educational book published by Zephyr Press. Don has spent years exploring and experimenting with sound both with thousands of people through his music institute, for his own growth, and with many leading-edge professionals in the field. His book is intended to present the spectrum of effects music has the power to create. It is intended to lead others to appreciate music more, and will, in fact, direct you to people in the field who can explain more about specific issues. I suggest you use it to inform yourself and as a resource for learning who has specialized in different music fields. In 300 or so pages you can only do so much so we can't expect it to fulfill all needs! If you desire to know more about research, this book will point you towards those who have more information for you. Read and enjoy this book--you will gain insights from it, I assure you!

Excellent source of inspiration and science of music

Here's a well written and inspired book that is honest in regard to the whole spectrum of music's power. Campbell is not afraid of inspiration, spirituality, research or the power of the spoken word. Most books on music take only one view. He has the courage to tell the world how music is experienced and perceived by many people. Perhaps the researchers could learn a few things from Campbell.......that not all people hear and process music in the same way. This book cuts new ground for the arts. Maybe researchers will regard subjective experience as a valid human perception. BRAVO for making me think, feel and listen to music in a more focused way.
