Boyer's "The Basic School" -inspirational and humbling.

Ernest Boyer's book, "The basic school", is the result of considerable research and involvement in elementary school education. Boyer has set out what is probably the most comprehensive description of what excellent education is. For all principals and teachers who are buried beneath the avalanche of daily crises, the book offers a periscope, a `big picture view of education' and a sense of direction. I see this book as one of the most comprehensive, inspirational and practical books on education that I have read but I am humbled when I realise how much further we in education still have to go. If the book has one shortcoming it is that it's a brilliant description of contemporary education and it does not engage in the debate of future pedagogy and future schooling. Still, if you want to be inspired, revitalised or even educationally `quickened' this is book great value, a great read and a great motivational tool. NEIL MACNEILL Principal
