In the Classroom

This is the best book on classroom management of children with these disorders I have ever read. It is very easy to read and put in to use. I recommened this book to any teacher or parent dealing with a child with TS, OCD, or ADHD. I have never read anything with so much understanding and empathy for these children.

A MUST for educators of neurologically-impaired children.

I read the first chapter of Teaching the Tiger and immediately turned it over to my 7th grade TS+ child's team of teachers. After they started using the book, I noticed an immediate change in the way they handled teaching him, and it just gets better every day. The authors have managed to convey what everyone dreams of--how to reach and teach children with ADD/ADHD, Tourette Syndrome, OCD, and other neurological difficulties. These children are teachable, and may even be gifted, but often they founder under conventional systems. This book explains in fine detail a "menu" of behaviors to expect as "normal" from these children, and then how to work WITH the child, not against him.

Outstanding resource for schools, parents, advisors...

Anyone involved with children with TS/OCD/ADD/ADHD - this is a *must read* handbook. The practical suggestions fit every life situation from pre-school through university and into adult life - family, home, job, friends, etc. I bought this book to share with my child's school because they seemed unable or unwilling to accept the challenges in the life of a gifted child with a disability. We now *homeschool* and work out our schedules naturally in accord with the suggestions from this book and experience that the school would have. There's even a section on writing IEP's and 504 plans. This is an excellent book.

A must-have book for parents of aTourette, ADD, or OCD child

I initially bought this book as a resource for "teaching" my son's school about his disorder. Not only was it invaluable for that, but it gave me NUMEROUS insights into my son. Every page was helpful. It can be used for any school-aged child, including those applying to college.

An excellent practical reference for educators

Teaching the Tiger is absolutely *the* best practical reference book for educators working with students who have Tourette Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, and/or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. (As the authors explain, these disorders are linked in that they are all disorders of impulse control; many Touretters also have symptoms of the other two disorders.) Descriptions of the disorders and explanations of associated symptoms are clear, well-written and jargon-free. The authors do an excellent job of explaining how these disorders affect emotions, thought processes, and overt behavior. Suggested educational techniques are practical, "everyday useful" kinds of interventions that are clearly and logically linked both to the situations in which their use is appropriate and to educational goals for the student. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who works with a student who has Tourette Syndrome. It's definitely not just for the special educator--guidance counselors, social workers, school psychologists, regular classroom teachers, and paraprofessionals should all find it a useful resource.
