Second Genesis

Very scary. Well written. Held my attention and had difficulty putting the book down. Could not wait to see how it ended

Better than Crichton's NEXT

Because I read both books within a few months, I couldn't help but compare Second Genesis with Crichton's NEXT. Why? Both contain manmade intelligent apes that can talk. But, while Crichton spends a lot of time discecting the modern scientific world, just as he did on a grander scale in State of Fear, Anderson keeps things fun. We rarely leave the rain forest and the story is much more of a thriller...which is great. Where Crichton gets bogged down in not just the science, but the science community, this book takes off on a wild hunt through the rainforest. And though the book is rooted in science, it's not full of scientific tirades. The pace stays quick, the action intense and the climax nerve wracking. Why the previous reviewers gave such low ranks is beyond me. This book deserves much better. Highly entertaining and intelligent. If I had to choose between NEXT and Second Genesis...Genesis gets my vote. -- Jeremy Robinson, author of Pulse (A Chess Team Adventure) and Kronos

Well-researched!

Billed as a "science thriller," SECOND GENESIS is a well-researched tale of biological manipulation gone very bad. The story line (which starts a bit slowly, but gains speed in the second half of the book) is plausible and thought-provoking. It raises entertaining but serious questions regarding ethics, legality, and even religious convictions involved in modern biological research. The author's straightforward writing style is "science-heavy," but it is also smooth enough to provide thorough development of the main characters. That style easily allows the reader to understand heroine Jamie Kendrick, both as a human being and as a professional biologist. Her friend Paulo Domingo has an enigmatic past, but he undoubtedly cares deeply for Jamie. The book's other characters (and there's quite a variety of them) are more superficial, but their interactions are not the author's prime intent. Anderson's real emphasis is on the research process itself, along with the potential - and potentially terrifying - consequences of unethical research practices. The story is simple. At a South American research station, biological mutants escape into the jungle and lead scientists on a deadly chase. But the results of that chase will grab the reader's attention. For anyone who enjoys the science thriller (not scifi!) genre as much as I do, I certainly recommend this book.
