Good For Doing It Yourself

The book is an excellent guide for starting your own LLC., but the software that came with my book is a 2.5 inch floppy disc and my computer has no 3.5 in floppy drive so the files on the disc are useless for me. I need a compact disc if I can find one.

Nolo does it again

Entrepreneurs may see the economic downturn of 2009 as an opportunity to start their own business. LLC - Limited Liability Company ensures that the owners are protected from personal liability, while allowing partnership style taxation. This NOLO publication is a great guide if you're flirting with the idea of opening your own LLC. As usual with NOLO publication, you have plenty of forms and an accompanying CD. Plus you can get free updates from their website. I like the fact that this guide helps one decide the best management structure for the business, and takes care of all the legal and tax paperwork.

Wish I had this book when I set up my business. Clear, straightforward and useful info.

I really wish I had this book several years ago when I was setting up my own business. I spent hours trying to figure out the differences between different kinds of business entities. And on page 23-25 of this book they are all laid out in a table , making it easy to compare the legal characteristics and tax characteristics. I would have paid the cost of this book just for this table when I was trying to set up my own business. Don't fall for those online sharks who say they can set up your LLC for you for a "small fee". You can do it yourself with this book in couple of hours. The book gives great advice on which type of business structure works the best, on the tax consequences and the paperwork. The included cd makes it easy to set up the papers you need to file and an appendix in the back outlines the requirement and fees for each state. Very useful and straightforward book.

Must Have for Entrepreneurs

Let me state for the record, I run an LLC and have Nolo's other book on LLC's "Your Limited Liability Company: An Operating Manual" (I can't even begin to count how many times that book has come in handy - I don't think my calculator goes that high). If I'd gotten this book - Form Your Own Limited Liability Company - I would've easily saved $750 in legal fees when I started up. That right there should be enough for you to stop reading this review, and just rush out and get this book if you're thinking about starting up an LLC. I'm not saying you can do completely without a lawyer, but I suspect you can certainly save at least $750 of legal fees using the information, the forms, templates, and all the tips and advice in this book. If I had to do it all over again, I'd use this book to craft all the basic stuff, then bring that to my attorney to tweak, and voila - instant LLC for less. Here are some key items you'll find in this book that are incredibly helpful (in addition to the CD with all the forms): * Comparing LLCs to other forms of business incorporation (including the "doing business as ____" and tax benefits / risks) * Basics of LLCs components you need to have vs. nice-to-have's * Key tax items to keep in mind (this is also good to help you weed out accountants - any of them that look at you blankly when you start discussing pass-through versus corporate tax returns is not for you) * Step-by-step walk-throughs of various documents you need to prepare * What not to do and what to do when it comes to selecting company names - and why * Basics operating elements (high-level summary of the other Nolo LLC Operating Manual I mentioned above) * Advice on finding good lawyers and accountants * State-specific information (oh, that I had this information 3 years ago) * Tearout versions of some of the forms, letters and templates so you can start to make notes and jot down ideas right away as you read through the book And like all Nolo books, you don't need to read through - you just skip around to the parts you need or want. Frankly, even just for the forms and templates, with the rest of the 259 pages just "padding" I think this book is well worth it. If you're thinking of forming an LLC, this is one resource you should not do without. After all, why throw away $750...?

Don't start a business without it!

This book was a life-saver! Unless you have thousands of dollars lying around to waste on legal fees, I strongly recommend you pick up this book. Its step-by-step, plain english instructions and form-filled CD-ROM make it super-easy to use. It gives you all of the information you'll need both to start up your LLC and to maintain it once its established. Mancuso walks you though every step from naming your LLC, to preparing an Operating Agreement, to taking care of the endless legal and tax paperwork. And I'm not just talking hypothetically, I used this book to form my own LLC and personally know three other business owners who have used it either when starting up or while switching from a partnership to and LLC. My company is going strong and thanks to this book I get both the flexibility of a partnership and the protection of a corporation. This is a great buy!

Top notch start up guide and resource

I bought this book when I started my business and I refer to it constantly. While it is geared toward LLCs, it offers information on other business entities such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, C Corp.s and S corporations to help you decide what is best for you. It provides all the guidance needed to establish and maintain an LLC. I made the mistake of loaning the book out once and had to ask for it back because I use it so much. It has an entire section on maintaining an LLC after it is established to help keep records and legalities straight. Well worth the money!
