An outstanding teaching and research tool.

I bought my first copy of this book last year when I was a volunteer reading tutor in the Atlanta school system (I'm not a professional teacher). I presented my learner with this book as an end of the year gift. He was very touched. In addition to the many short biographies, this book includes a copy of the Empancipation Proclamation, Reconstruction Amendments, "I Have a Dream" speech and Dr. King's letter from the Birmingham City jail. Additionally, there are some fantastic policial chapters explaining sit ins, the march on Washington and the Black Power movement. I strongly recommend this reading for anyone younger than 30 (although I'm told it's a middle school reading level). I have bought additional copies to use for other community volunteer programs and plan to keep at least one copy for myself. Susan Altman presents more than 400 years of Black American history is a very interesting and concise manner. A great reference book to serve as a platform for further research.
