The book is really good and was delivered in excellent condition and everyone in my chess club picks it up and uses it

Typos? Who Cares?

Ok, so there are some typos, but that really doesn't matter. The content of the book really helped me become a better chess player. Eric Schiller has the ability to write good, quality chess books even if he can't spell worth beans or use proper grammer. I mean, don't look at the typos and say "This book sucks. It won't help me." Look at the book in general. If you look past the typos, you have a very good book that will help you become a better chess player.

2000 edition

I'd like to point out that most if not all of the typos and goofs mentioned in the reviews were corrected in a year 2000 edition of the book. Unfortunately, the edition information can only be found by studying the copyright information. But I wanted to let people know, because it seems to be a pretty slick book on learning chess once the errors have been corrected. (I'd argue, though, that it's irresponsible to release a book full of easily correctable errors. Do it right the first time.)

This book rocks

This book is the best. It covers everything from rules to analsys to training and the Opening, Middle and Engames. It should be in every library. I am an IM because of this book!!!

This book should be on every beginner's shelf

One of our most prolific chess writers, Eric Schiller has again produced a most useful volume in his usual clear and concise style. Not intended to be the last word on chess, the Encyclopedia fulfills its promise of extracting practical nuggets useful for beginners and intermediate players from his own experience, the classic chess literature, and tournament play. Dr. Schiller truly does have an encyclopedic knowledge of the game and cites cogent examples from classic and contemporary play to illustrate his points. This is an easy book to browse in, and the reader will invariably come away with some tidbit that will enhance his/her understanding of the general principles of openings, middle game, end game, tactics,and strategy. Especially recommended for serious beginners.
