Always a good story, characters

I've been coming to Brooks' westerns in recent years for "fun" reading in-between books one might consider more serious, or "challenging." Not that Brooks isn't capable of literary works himself - but a writer needs to make a living. I hope he gets something out of these series, because they're pretty good. The Jim Glass books are a bit darker than the previous "Dakota Lawman" series, and every bit as entertaining. "A Bullet for Billy" draws some from the Billy the Kid tale, and maybe a little from "The Shootist" even (the author has some feeling for the idea of an old-time no-nonsense type going out on a final mission), but Brooks handles his sources well here. Dependably good writing, terrific cover art!
