Survival Guide for General, Organic and Biochemistry

The soft bound book by Morrison, Atwood, and Caughran is a recent publication, copyrighted in 2008. I am a professor in a fisheries and aquatic science university department who is looking who is looking for a text to use in a fundamental biochemistry and cell biology class for students who are come from environmental science departments, i.e., non-health science majors. This book has 17 chapters beginning with description of the metric system, significant figures, density and heat transfer; inorganic chemistry principles; nuclear chemistry (radiation); chemical reactions and stoichiometry; states of matter and colligative properties; acids and bases; organic chemistry nomenclature; substitution, addition, elimination reactions; O/R reactions; carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and enzymes; nucleotides and nucleic acids; and a math review for the final chapter. All of these topics are packed into 176 pages. So while the text will unlikely serve as a primary text for a specific course in chemistry or biochemistry, it would be a good supplement for an undergraduate course that expects students to have some knowledge about a variety of chemistry topics. The book is not expensive so is worth the price for undergraduate students who many need to quickly review, brush up, or "survive" a variety of fundamental concepts and topics.
