The best sports medicine book I have

I'm a dancer, not an athlete. I have several books on sports and dance injuries, and this is the best I own. It is excellent for self care if you have a mild injury that is amenable to self care. (Of course, it is not a substitute for seeing a doctor in person and if I had any questions or doubts about an injury I would do so ASAP.) It is also an excellent supplement to a doctor, explaining what you need to know in detail, defining terms, and giving anatomy diagrams. It gives instructions for care immediately after the injury, before you may be able to get to a doctor. It includes illustrated instructions for rehabilitation and strengthening exercises. This book has been a great comfort to me. I get very anxious if I am in pain and don't know what is going on, and find explanations to be reassuring.

Best book for orthopedic reference - a true "bible reference

I refer to this book at least 4 times a week for different reasons; i.e, injuries, surgical rehab, how to prevent injuries, flexibility. This book is truly a "bible" as one can't help but use it for reference. The author, Dr. Micheli, is also my doctor, the best down to earth, talented docto

This is a MUST HAVE book for every active amateur athlete

This is a GREAT BOOK! I've used it dozens of times over the past 4 years . Plus I've recommended it to friends with sports injury questions at least 12 times. If you love being active and want to know how to continue even though your body is breaking down, get this book. You will refer to it time and time again. After all, we are not professional athletes with a staff to look after our aging bodies. Not only does it teach you how to get fixed, it shows you how to prevent getting hurt next time.

  Good even for old ladies!

I bought this book after tearing a calf muscle and pinching a nerve in my back. Although the injuries were not caused by my sports, they did force me to miss a whole season of hiking and biking. Thanks in part to the contents (and the help of a sports medicine doctor), I have recovered well enough to complete an 80-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina (one of the tougher sections in the South).

Compared to other books I consulted, this one covered more relevant topics and gave better detailed rehab and conditioning information. I heartily recommend it!

  A Godsend!

If you are going to exercise, there's a good possibility that you will at some point have to deal with an injury. This book will save you a lot of time and frustration if you do get injured, and if you read it and follow it's advice, you will probably be able to prevent injury in the first place.

When I developed bursitis in my hip (from running)I saw a General Practitoner, who basically told me to stop running. Then I saw an Orthopedic Specialist who acted as if I were wasting his time because he had patients with REAL problems. Then, I found this book, which taught me all I needed to know about the condition and treating it on my own. It describes the causes of injury and gives you techniques and exercises that actually HELP. I haven't had any problems with my hip for several years now, but I recently developed pain in my shoulder (rotator cuff tendinits) from weightlifting. I had been doing all the usual home treatment things, dreading the idea of going to a doctor who wouldn't help me. Then I remembered this book! I read about the various shoulder injuries and began doing some of the stretching and strengthening exercises the book describes, and within 2 days the condition began to improve.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who exercises. It has been a real godsend for me.
