Expanding into new markets and offering nearly six million used books to customers, Thrift Books announces a new affiliate.

The used book retailer Thrift Books this month announced it would be partnering with Silver Arch Books, based in St. Louis, Missouri. With the addition of this new affiliate, Thrift Books now has distribution centers or affiliates in eight states within the United States.

“We have been looking at the Midwest market for a long time,” said Thrift Books CEO Hector Rivas. “So the collaboration with Silver Arch Books and its St. Louis distribution center has been long-anticipated.”

The new relationship with Silver Arch Books will increase the Thrift Books’ access to quality cheap used books by more than 750,000, bringing the total amount of books available to Thrift Books customers to nearly six million.

The addition of Silver Arch Books as a Thrift Books’ affiliate is a further sign of significant growth of Thrift Books, which started in 2003 as a small storage unit of used books in Kirkland, Washington. Within years, Thrift Books has grown to become the nation’s largest online used book retailer. Through its affiliates and distribution centers in numerous states, Thrift Books has access to cheap books across the nation, including Washington, Oregon, Michigan, Georgia, Texas, Connecticut, Arizona and now Missouri.

This December, Thrift Books reached a milestone—it donated its one-millionth book to charity. Since early 2009, Thrift Books has been donating used books to charities in support of fighting worldwide illiteracy. Today, through the efforts of Thrift Books and its not-for-profit literacy partners, one million books have been donated and distributed to countries in Africa and Asia, including Mozambique, Nigeria, the Gambia and Burma.

Thrift Books’ free standard shipping guarantees that orders on cheap books sent within the United States will be received in 4 to 14 business days. Customers placing orders of $25 or more will automatically receive free expedited shipping within the United States, which guarantees that orders will be received within 3 to 8 business days. For orders that total less than $25, Thrift Books continues to charge a shipping cost of $2.99 per book for expedited shipping.

The savings that this deal offers to our customers are potentially huge. Customers placing large orders will now receive those orders much faster—and with no extra charge or effort,” Rivas said.

Online retailer of cheap used books, Thrift Books’ green program conserves resources while saving consumers money.

Thriftbooks.com expects to recycle more books than ever this upcoming year, which in turn has led the Environmental Protection Agency to recognize the retailer as a WasteWise partner.

"In 2009 alone, we purchased over 41 million used books, primarily all of which would have ended up in landfills,” said Hector Rivas, chief executive officer of Thrift Books. “We expect to save even more books this year as we continue to grow.”

Thrift Books purchases in bulk hundreds of thousands of used books each week that are at risk of being needlessly discarded. Every book that is purchased is examined for quality—to determine whether the book is in good condition for resale. Those in good condition are resold online or are donated to Thrift Books’ non-profit literacy partners. Those books that do not make the quality requirements are sent directly to recycling plants.

Currently, Thrift Books recycles more than two million pounds of books each month. Each ton of 100% post-consumer copy paper (which comes from approximately 1.4 tons of books) received at the recycling plants saves 24 trees, 7000 gallons of water, 41000 kilowatts of electricity and 60 pounds of air pollution. Since 2004, Thrift Books has recycled over 56,000 tons of books.

Thrift Books has found that by creating a large market for cheap books online, not only are used books recycled, but the need for newly printed books declines, which in turn decreases the demand for paper and trees.

After achieving a record year in sales, Thrift Books, an online retailer of used books, aims for domination on the Internet.

While many are preemptively bemoaning the death of the current publishing industry, others are successfully promoting literacy and book sales. Thrift Books, a company that sells cheap used books on the Internet, recently sold their 10 millionth book online.

“It’s a very exciting milestone for us,” said Hector Rivas, CEO of Thrift Books LLC. “We really love what we’re doing, and we are so pleased that we can share our passion with others.”

Thrift Books sold its first book, “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White, in 2003, and has since become the largest online seller of used books. Now boasting an inventory of almost 5 million books at any given time, Thrift Books processes an average 80,000 books a day.

“We’ve come a long way from our days in a small storage unit,” said Rivas. “Today we operate in six states and employ close to 250 people.”

With the invention of the iPad, Kindle, Nook and other e-readers, select literary editors and agents claim the publishing industry will suffer in terms of physical books sold. However, with cheap books sold at a discount, Thrift Books anticipates a bright future with more growth to come.

“Our business model is to provide customers with quality books sold at a steep discount,” said Seth Beal, president and chief operating officer of Thrift Books. “We let customers spend less and read more. This next year should be a great one for us, with lots of growth and sales to look forward to.”

In the latter half of 2010 the used books retailer will roll out two additional warehouses in the United States. The company will then continue to open up warehouses domestically before expanding to international markets in the UK and other areas.
