Susan Eloise Hinton, better known by her pen name S.E. Hinton, was born in Oklahoma in 1948 and educated at the University of Tulsa. Her first novel, The Outsiders, was published when she was still a teenager. This first book was a runaway success, originally and still a best seller. The Outsiders and Rumble Fish were both adapted to films released in 1983. Also adapted to film were Tex (1982) and That Was Then...This Is Now (1985).In 1988 she received the first Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her overall contribution in writing for teens. Hinton lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
