Madeleine L'Engle wrote the young adult classic A Wrinkle in Time, winner of a Newbery Medal. In addition to awards and medals won by individual books, L'Engle also received a number of honors including the ALAN Award for Outstanding Contribution to Adolescent Literature from the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Humanities Award. Born in New York in 1918, L'Engle grew up in the city and moved with her family to the French Alps when she was twelve. She attended an English boarding school, and finished high school at boarding school in South Carolina. L'Engle graduated from Smith College and moved to New York City, working in the theater and writing. As she continued to write her more than sixty books, L'Engle lived in Connecticut with her family for nine years and returned to the city where she worked as a volunteer librarian at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. L'Engle died in 2007.
